Purpose

While the primary purpose of CP is for a quick way to determine approximately how much users have contributed to NetGore, it can also be used for other various tasks. The uses of CP are based around the idea of, the more you give, the more you get. As you help out more, you will naturally gain CP, and the more CP you have available, the easier it will be to encourage others to help you.

Spending CP

There are two CP counters used. The first is your total CP earned. This value never decreases, even as you spend CP. It is also the value everyone else can see. The second is total CP spent. This value will increase as you spend your CP on various stuff. To prevent people from feeling discouraged to spend their available CP, this value is never displayed to anyone else. So there is no reason to not spend CP if there is something you want to spend it on.

Earning CP

CP can be earned in many ways. Below is a list of the current ways CP can be earned. More ways may be added in the future.

Wiki edits
Multiple variables are taken into consideration, such as the size of your edit, total number of edits, pages created, etc. The best way to earn CP through the wiki is to contribute as much quality content as you can. Don't try to cheat the system by making tons of small edits, creating text just to delete it, etc.
Filling requests
Editing the wiki for filling requests will earn you CP for both your edits to the wiki and for contributing to a request. Even requests with small bounties can add up very quickly. See Requests (CP) for details.
Donating
Donating to NetGore will gain you a substantial amount of CP since you are helping pay for the various costs of NetGore (e.g. web server, domain name) and compensating the developers for their time spent creating it. After all, the more we get from donations, the less time we have to spend at our real jobs. ;)
Forum posts
You will gain a small amount of CP for each forum post you make. The contents or location of the post do not matter - just the total post count. While its not a very quick way to earn CP, it adds up.
Other forms of help
CP can also be given manually by admin when help is requested. Such requests are typically made in the forums. Help out when and where you can, and you will be rewarded for your time and effort.

Abusing the system

Most methods of earning CP can be abused relatively easily. There is simply just no way to prevent it automatically. Don't think you are clever by deleting all the content on a lengthy wiki page then adding it back, or making each edit of a page just a few words long. Every single little thing that increases (and decreases) your CP is logged in the database, and is very easy to look up.

Anyone caught blatantly abusing the system will either receive a huge deduction in CP or be banned from the site, depending on the severity of the abuse. Those who are suspected of abusing the system, or have been performing questionable actions, will first receive a private message from the admin before receiving any punishment (typically a deduction in CP). Users will be notified of any punishments issued to them and have a chance to explain their actions.

If you feel you have been punished unfairly, please contact an Spodi as soon as possible.

FAQ

Why isn't my CP rising?

Deductions to CP are always immediate, but additions to it only happen at regular intervals (approximately every hour). This is for a variety of reasons, and is this way by design. So just give it some time, and it'll rise.

Why is my CP stuck at 0?

You must make at least one change on the wiki for your CP to start being calculated. You can donate and make forum posts, but it'll remain at 0 indefinitely if you never make any changes on the wiki. However, once you make that initial edit on the wiki, all your past forum posts, donations, etc will all be included. You will always be able to get credit for your contributions.

Why did my CP suddenly change for no reason?

Most likely the CP calculation algorithm was altered to try and make it more fair or to take additional variables into consideration.

Can you tell me the exact equation used for CP?

No. Doing so would only encourage people to try and abuse the system to allow them to earn as much CP as quickly as possible with as little effort as possible.
